William Johnston won the Victoria Cross on 14th September, 1915, while serving as a Captain with the 59th Field Company of the Royal Engineers on the Aisne. In March 1915 he was appointed to the command of the 172nd Tunneling Company before being promoted to Brigade Major of 15 Battalion, 5th Division in May. On 6th June, 1915, he was killed by a sniper's bullet at Hill 60, in the southern part of the Ypres salient |
